Frequently Asked Questions

What is permanent makeup?

Permanent makeup, also known as cosmetic tattooing or micropigmentation, is a technique that uses specialized pigments to enhance your natural features. Unlike traditional tattoos, permanent makeup is designed to look soft and natural, mimicking the appearance of makeup. Popular treatments include eyebrow microblading, nanoblading, ombré powder brows, permanent eyeliner, and lip blush. Results typically last 1-3 years depending on your skin type, lifestyle, and the specific treatment.

What’s the difference between microblading, nanoblading, and ombré brows?

  • Microblading creates hair-like strokes using a manual hand tool with tiny needles, perfect for a natural, feathered look.
  • Nanoblading uses an even finer needle to create ultra-precise, delicate hair strokes, ideal for clients with oily skin or those wanting the most natural result.
  • Ombré powder brows create a soft, powdered makeup effect that’s fuller at the tail and lighter at the front, offering more definition and typically lasting longer than microblading. During your consultation, we’ll help you choose the best technique for your skin type, lifestyle, and desired look.

Does permanent makeup hurt?

Most clients describe the sensation as mild discomfort rather than pain. We apply a topical numbing cream before and during the procedure to maximize your comfort. Pain tolerance varies by individual and treatment area—eyebrows are typically the least sensitive, while lips may be slightly more tender. Many clients are surprised by how comfortable the process is and even relax or doze off during their appointment.

How long does permanent makeup last?

Results typically last 1-3 years, though longevity varies based on several factors including your skin type, sun exposure, skincare routine, and the specific treatment. Oily skin tends to fade faster, while normal to dry skin retains pigment longer. Ombré powder brows generally last longer than microblading. We recommend a touch-up every 12-18 months to maintain optimal color and shape.

Am I a good candidate for permanent makeup?

Most people are excellent candidates! However, permanent makeup may not be suitable if you are pregnant or nursing, undergoing chemotherapy, have certain skin conditions (active acne, eczema, psoriasis in the treatment area), are on blood thinners, or have specific health conditions. We’ll review your medical history during your consultation to ensure this treatment is safe and effective for you.

What should I expect during the healing process?

The healing process takes approximately 4-6 weeks and occurs in phases.

Days 1-7: The area will appear darker and bolder than the final result—this is completely normal. You may experience slight swelling or redness that subsides within 24-48 hours.

Days 7-14: The color will begin to flake and lighten significantly, which can be alarming but is expected. Never pick or scratch the area.

Weeks 2-6: The true color emerges as the skin fully heals and pigment settles. We’ll provide detailed aftercare instructions and are available to answer questions throughout your healing journey.

Why do I need a touch-up appointment?

A touch-up (also called a perfecting session) is scheduled 6-8 weeks after your initial appointment and is included in your service price. During healing, some pigment naturally doesn’t retain, which is completely normal due to individual skin healing patterns. The touch-up allows us to perfect the shape, add density where needed, and ensure even color saturation for beautiful, long-lasting results.

Can I see before and after photos?

Absolutely! We have an extensive portfolio of before and after photos showcasing our work. You can view examples on our Instagram (@phibeautyspa), in our office during your consultation, or request specific examples for the treatment you’re considering. Every client’s results are unique, and we’re proud to show the natural, beautiful transformations we create.

Preparation & Aftercare

How should I prepare for my permanent makeup appointment?

To ensure optimal results:

  • Avoid blood thinners (alcohol, aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E) for 48 hours before
  • No caffeine the day of your appointment (it can increase sensitivity)
  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning for 2 weeks prior
  • Don’t wax, tint, or thread brows for 1 week before eyebrow services
  • Stop retinol and chemical peels 2 weeks before treatment
  • Come with clean skin—no makeup in the treatment area
  • Eat a meal beforehand to maintain stable blood sugar

We’ll provide a complete preparation checklist when you book.

What products should I avoid after my permanent makeup treatment?

During the 4-6 week healing period, avoid:

– Direct sun exposure and tanning beds
– Swimming pools, hot tubs, saunas, and steam rooms
– Makeup or skincare products on the treated area
– Retinol, glycolic acid, and chemical exfoliants
– Picking, scratching, or peeling the area
– Heavy sweating (intense workouts)
– Sleeping face-down on your pillow

After healing, avoid applying retinol, chemical peels, or laser treatments directly on the permanent makeup area, as these can cause premature fading.

### **Can I wear makeup after my permanent makeup procedure?**

You must avoid wearing makeup on the treated area during the healing process (4-6 weeks). For eyebrow procedures, you can wear eye makeup as long as you don’t get products on your brows. For eyeliner, avoid all eye makeup during healing. After the area is fully healed, you can apply makeup as usual—though many clients find they need far less!

When can I return to normal activities?

Most clients return to work and normal activities immediately, though the treated area will be noticeably darker for the first week. Avoid strenuous exercise, swimming, and excessive sweating for 10-14 days. You can resume your regular skincare routine on other areas of your face immediately, just avoiding the treated zone.

We combine exceptional artistry with a personalized, calming experience. Our PhiBrows Academy certification means you’re receiving world-class technique, while our attention to detail ensures natural-looking results tailored specifically to your facial features, coloring, and preferences. Clients consistently describe us as knowledgeable, patient, and talented, with a comfortable atmosphere that feels like visiting an old friend rather than a clinical procedure. Do you offer consultations?

Yes! Every permanent makeup service includes a thorough consultation before we begin. During this time, we’ll discuss your goals, review your medical history, assess your skin and features, show you examples of our work, explain the process and healing, and design your custom shape and color. For clients who want to meet us first, we also offer complimentary 15-minute phone consultations—just give us a call!

What pigments and tools do you use?

We use only premium, hypoallergenic pigments specifically formulated for permanent makeup (not traditional tattoo inks). Our pigments are designed to fade naturally over time rather than changing to unnatural colors. All our tools are sterilized or single-use disposable to ensure the highest safety standards. We’re happy to discuss our products and techniques in detail during your consultation.

What types of facials do you offer?

We offer customized facial treatments tailored to your skin’s specific needs, whether you’re dealing with acne, aging, dryness, sensitivity, or simply want a relaxing, rejuvenating experience. Our facials include deep cleansing, exfoliation, extractions (if needed), nourishing masks, and hydration. We’ll assess your skin during your appointment and create a treatment plan that addresses your concerns and goals.

What’s the difference between waxing and sugaring?

Both effectively remove unwanted hair, but sugaring is gentler on the skin.

Waxing uses a resin-based product applied warm and removed against hair growth, while sugaring uses a natural paste made from sugar, lemon, and water applied at room temperature and removed in the direction of hair growth. Sugaring typically causes less irritation, is better for sensitive skin, and can be less painful. We’ll help you choose the best method for your skin type and the area being treated.

How often should I get lash lift and tint services?

Lash lifts typically last 6-8 weeks, depending on your natural lash growth cycle. We recommend scheduling your next appointment around 6-8 weeks after your previous service. Lash tinting lasts about 4-6 weeks. Many clients combine both services for maximum impact—lifted, darkened lashes that make your eyes pop without mascara!

Is permanent makeup safe?

When performed by trained, licensed professionals in a sterile environment, permanent makeup is very safe. We follow strict sanitation protocols, use single-use needles, and conduct thorough health screenings before every procedure. Allergic reactions are extremely rare, but we can perform a patch test if you have concerns. Proper aftercare is essential for preventing infection and ensuring optimal healing—we provide detailed instructions and support throughout the process.

Can I get permanent makeup if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?

We do not perform permanent makeup procedures on pregnant or nursing mothers. While there’s limited research on the effects of cosmetic tattooing during pregnancy, we prefer to err on the side of caution for you and your baby’s safety. We’d be happy to schedule your appointment after you’ve finished breastfeeding!

What if I have allergies or sensitive skin?

Please inform us of any allergies during your consultation. While allergic reactions to permanent makeup pigments are rare, we can perform a patch test if you have concerns or a history of severe allergies. If you have sensitive skin, we’ll take extra precautions and may recommend certain techniques or pigments that work best for your skin type.

Can I get permanent makeup if I have an autoimmune condition or take certain medications?

It depends on your specific condition and medications. Some autoimmune disorders, blood thinners, or medications (like Accutane) may affect your eligibility or healing. Please provide a complete list of medications and health conditions during your consultation so we can determine if permanent makeup is safe and appropriate for you. In some cases, we may require written clearance from your physician.

When will I need my first touch-up?

Your complimentary perfecting session is scheduled 6-8 weeks after your initial appointment. This is a critical step to ensure perfect, long-lasting results. After that, most clients return for color refresh appointments every 12-18 months, though some prefer to wait up to 2-3 years depending on how their color fades.

What happens if I don’t maintain my permanent makeup?

Permanent makeup naturally fades over time due to skin cell turnover, sun exposure, and other factors. If you don’t get touch-ups, your permanent makeup will gradually lighten and may fade unevenly. While it won’t disappear completely, maintaining regular touch-ups every 12-24 months ensures your brows, eyeliner, or lips always look fresh, evenly colored, and beautifully shaped.

Can you fix permanent makeup done elsewhere?

In many cases, yes! We offer color correction and shape refinement for permanent makeup performed at other studios. However, we’ll need to assess your current permanent makeup during a consultation to determine the best approach. Some situations may require additional sessions or techniques. Bring clear photos of your current permanent makeup to your consultation if possible.

Can permanent makeup be removed?

Yes, permanent makeup can be removed or lightened using laser removal or saline removal techniques, though this requires multiple sessions and can be costly. This is why choosing an experienced, skilled artist initially is so important. Our goal is to create results you’ll love for years to come, eliminating the need for removal.
